In the vaults of Nemeth Jewellers gleam some of Winnipeg's best kept secrets. During 14 years of quietly building a reputation for outstanding quality, this fine jeweller has developed an exclusive selection of higher end jewellery and unique handcrafted custom designs. Giving a new twist to destination shopping, clients from as far as Chicago come seeking the jeweller hidden in Winnipeg's south end.
Besides being the city's exclusive distributor of the prestigious Millennium jewellery collection, Nemeth offers a broad selection in platinum as well as a wide range of 18-carat gold imported Italian goods. The rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets feature impeccable designs, outstanding craftsmanship and quality materials.
"They make some of the most exquisite jewellery in the world," says Joe Nemeth Sr. "It's wearable, functional and beautiful."
A watchmaker and diamond appraiser by profession, Nemeth has a keen eye for the details that give each piece its integrity. Looking beyond what a customer sees, he inspects each joint in a bracelet and looks inside the curve of the clasp to see how well it is finished.
"Quality is what we're most concerned about here," he stresses. "We don't carry anything that isn't well made. Our job is to ensure each client is getting the best quality for the money spent."
He adds, "If you don't know your diamonds, know your jeweller. It takes years and years to learn what goes on behind the scenes to manufacture a great piece of jewellery and to know how to recognize it."
With more than 25 years in the industry, Nemeth applies his experience and dedication custom designing to the most exclusive pieces available in the city. From leading edge designs to spectacular gems from around the world, from the contemporary to the traditional, the possibilities are endless. Nemeth Jewellers can create a unique and personalized setting for any gem.
Nemeth works side by side with his son, Joe Jr., and his daughter, Michelle, both certified goldsmiths. Also a graduate jeweller of the Canadian Jewellery Association, Joe Nemeth Jr. is the main buyer for the family-run business. With access to markets in North America, Europe, and beyond, the Nemeth team can fulfill any request, whether it involves bringing in a specific diamond from Antwerp or searching the globe for a rare Alexandrite. Lately, high quality Canadian diamonds with their inscribed "Polar Bear" insignia have become increasingly popular.
Many clients come for the custom design, seeking a matching wedding band for an engagement ring or heirloom. Still others come with a rough drawing of an idea. It's up to Nemeth to turn these visions to reality.
"If they can imagine it, we can make it," he asserts. "We're not afraid to tackle any project. We have the materials and the expertise."
Recently, a client came in with a piece of costume jewellery that she wanted copied, using gold, platinum and diamonds. Nemeth worked with her to enhance the design until it was superior to the original idea. Being a perfectionist, he does not hesitate to spend many an afternoon working closely with a customer combining elements of different designs to create just the right look. Both men and women fly in from all over North America seeking his unusual and unique designs.
"It's not just any piece of jewellery," explains Nemeth. "It makes a statement."
At the same time, each ring is a masterpiece of precision work in which proper scale is determined, structural integrity is ensured and claws are carefully designed to secure and protect the gem while providing visual appeal. Each ring is precisely sized and appraised using state-of-the-art equipment.
Nemeth has also invested in the latest computer equipment to make ordering higher end jewellery and tracking specific gems even more efficient. He uses this same equipment to monitor customer tastes and request.
"There's nothing worse than setting out to find something only to be told it's unavailable," he notes.
Increasingly, clients come to Nemeth looking for higher end pieces that are special and unusual. "Our customers have led us in this direction. It's been by listening to clients and what they want from us that we have developed our selection. There's definitely a need," he comments.
Over the years, clients have come to expect Nemeth to fill that need. The skilled jeweller has earned their trust and loyalty by repeatedly exceeding their expectations. Nemeth is passionate about his work and his privileged role in the happy occasions of people's lives.
There's a perceptible gleam in his eye when he says, "Sometimes I'd almost like to be in a corner somewhere to see the look on her face in the magic moment when she opens her special gift."
